Big Wave SUP action expected for Kite Beach Cabarete
Thursday, November 21, 2013
Great conditions for beginner SUP on Kite Beach Cabarete
Wow...quality Wave Riding action in the morning followed by good kiting in the afternoon and evening.
Swell continues to roll onto Kite Beach Cabarete, cloud cover is keeping the wind off until later in the morning, making for clean wave riding conditions and almost Air Condition type Temperatures, in fact the water is much warmer than the air. Sun eventually burns off the clouds and the day´s heat builds and rises. The trade winds fill in the void left by the rising hot air making for quality Kite Action. The hotter the day gets, the stronger the wind becomes. This is why Late will be Great for kite boarding!
A distant Low Pressure system will help keep this Perfect Waterman Weather in place for the next four days, after that the Next Big Front will barrel off the East Coast and bring us more good surf starting Tuesday Morning and possibly some Storm Kite Action Thursday and Friday.
Oh by the way our latest Book is out, it´s called the Waterman, this book is available in the itunes store.
Our latest Learn to Kite Book is also available in the itunes store.

Funky Big Surf
Big surf for Kite Beach Cabarete, but it´s all funked up. The Low Pressure System which brought us this quality surf stalled over Bermuda and has almost taken on Hurricane type characteristics.
Unfortunately this set up is pushing onshore winds which are not strong enough to kite but too strong for quality paddle boarding...basically the surf is Funked Up! Hopefully this will change as another large Low Pressure systems charges off the East Coast of the US. This next Low should clear the North Atlantic while bringing ridable surf and wind.

Wow... Swell Hits Kite Beach Cabarete
Oh ya...the swell hit and it is cranking...the wind stayed side off shore which made for some quality conditions. Only 4 guys ventured out on Paddle Boards at Kite Beach Cabarete. The Channel was open but surf was pounding. Once out side there were Hawaii 5-0 peaks with plenty of room to ride left and right. The side off shore wind worked perfectly with this swell direction. All in all it was a near perfect Big Wave Day on Kite Beach Cabarete.
Looks like the Swell will build through out the day and peak manana at Sunrise
Manana is going to be more about finding an Open Channel and a working Wave. Should be world class surf manana. let´s Paddle Board Kite Beach Cabarete.

SUP Storm heading to Kite Beach Cabarete
Should be good kiting action before the next Low Pressure system arrives.
It looks like the moisture from this pressure system will arrive late
night Thursday, there will be a southerly wind before the low which will
mix with the Trade Winds to create quality Kite Boarding Action! This action will stop as the Low displaces the Bermuda High Pressure System.
Rain will hit first followed by massive swell. By the time this Low gets to the North Shore of the Dominican Republic it will loose steam meaning that we don´t expect a strong clearing wind. This Low should produce swell for an extended period making for quality SUP action after the rain clears.

Good SUP action on Kite Beach Cabarete
Here is the Action for the week of November 11th 2013
AM: Sup early, quality surf for entry level through advanced through Wednesday.
PM: Late will be Great for Kite Boarding. Trades will build in nicely.
Here is what is happening:
Still have nice surf rolling in on the outer reef at Kite Beach Cabarete. The next Low Pressure System will be charging off the East Coast of North America by mid week. This Low will:
1. Displace the Bermuda High which brings Kite Beach Cabarete Trade Winds.
2. Bring a ho loto swell to Kite Beach Cabarete.
The early mornings will be calm with a quality Paddle Boarding Wave followed by strong trade winds in the afternoon. Notice that there are two late season Tropical Storms trying to develop off the North Coast of South America. These small storms will allow additional wind and swell to roll onto Kite Beach Cabarete reefs.
By midweek a massive Low will be charging towards Kite Beach Cabarete. Notice that this is at the 78 hour mark or 3 days from this Monday Morning.
Look for quality entry level through advanced Paddle Boarding for Kite Beach Cabarete through mid week. Big Surf and Wind action will dominate later this week through the weekend. If you want to take advantage of quality SUP action and lite wind Kite action then email us at methodlodge@gmail.com if you want to Paddle and Kite big wave action then be on the reef late this week through the weekend.

Kite Beach Living,
Interview with SUP and Kite Board Coach, Maui John, about 2012 Hurricane Season for Kite Beach and the North Coast of the Dominican Republic.
Hurricane Season 2012 wave predictions, SUP, Paddleboarding, Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Q. What is your surf forecast for 2012?
A. I just came in from a nice session off a Tropical Wave . It's was an early wave and i'm looking for an all time SUP 2012 Hurricane Season.
Q. Most of the Hurricane Experts are calling for a mild Hurricane Season, but not you?
A. Ya, there is a big difference between a good surfable swell and a Named Storm. See those guys don't care about the Tropical Wave we just surfed this morning. To them it almost does not exist, to those who crave the wave, these type swells are very important. Look for a lot of surfable swell in 2012 Hurricane Season.
Q. I see, 5 Tropical Waves could be better that one Hurricane that hits the coast.
A. Ya, more times then not a Named Storm close by does not throw Sup or Surf waves without a lot of wind.
Q. So what are you calling for?
A. A lot of Tropical Storms and Waves, consistent easterly Swell making for quality SUP, Paddle Board waves.
Q. Why do you think this?
A. Heat is gonna be the thing this season...already it's hot and already there is good movement from Africa to through the Dominican Republic.
Maui John Coaches every level of Paddle Boarding and Kiteboarding from the Method Shop on Kite Beach. If you are interested in How to Kite Surf or How to SUP contact Maui John. 809-849-2147.

Interview by Juan Ariel
Paddle boarding with Maui John
Q. How did you get into Paddle Boarding?
A. I started Paddle Boarding years ago as a way to get waves on the outer reefs. I brought Paddle Boarding to the DR from Maui mainly for spear fishing.
Q. How did that go?
A. Not very well, I found out two things for sure:
1. Paddle boards don't work for spear fishing when there is surf.
2. There is a lot of quality surf around the DR.
Q. So you ended up surfing instead of spearing?
A. Ya, I would go out on what I thought were "small' days and I realized quickly that there is quality surf on the outer reefs. The more I paddled the more great waves I found.
Q. Was anyone else out?
A. It was funny, because the older guys from this island know about the waves on the outer reefs, but most people who visit don't think there is any surf other than Encuentro...it's great.
Q. More waves for you.
A. Ya, there are more great waves around the DR than great surfers, that is for sure. Can't say that about many tropical places. In Costa Rica or Puerto Rico there may be 40 good guys on a wave, and here one guy maybe working two or three great breaks.
Q. How has Paddle Boarding changed since you first brought it here.
A. Definitely growing, there are probably 4 or 5 shop/schools now. A lot more people paddling.
Q. What do you enjoy most about Paddleboarding?
A. Coaching...I love to get out in good surf and share my knowledge of how the waves, currents and reef work as well as Coaching the strategies of wave riding.
Q. Do you still get solo sessions?
A. All the time...the North Coast of the DR is amazing...there are so many waves, almost every one I know who paddle boards has their own spot. This is a huge island. It is also an old Island, which matters, old islands have a lot more beaches and reefs.
Q. So behind the beach there is a lagoon?
A. Yeap, the Kite Beach Lagoon is directly behind the Kite Beach, it's all National Park, beautiful and perfect Paddleboarding. The fact that there is no current and no wind makes it perfect for anyone of any age to experience Paddlboarding. We offer rentals and tours.
Q. How big is it?
A. Over 80sq kilometers
Q. Huge
A. Yes, massive and beautiful!
Q. Where do you see Paddleboarding going?
A. Gonna be huge because you can surf the power in the paddle, the wind and waves. You are always surfing when your are on a Paddle Board.
Q. Will it replace surfing?
A. No...well...it will replace parts of surfing like longboards, but waves like Encuentro and La Boca will always be great for surfing and never be great for Paddleboarding (compared to the outer reefs).
Q. Why is that?
A. Waves close to the beach and hollow are great for surfing where as a big Hawaii-five-0 wave breaking a mile off shore is perfect for Paddle Boarding. Going a mile or two is no problem on a paddle board. I would never lay down and paddle so far away.
Q. So both sports exist but not on the same wave?
A. Ya, that's right. A great paddle board wave is probably not a good surf spot and a good surf spot is probably not a good Paddle board spot.
Q. Which do you like better, Maui or Dominican Republic?
A. Maui and the Dominican Republic are very similar, both are 18 degrees off the equator and surrounded by outer reefs. With that said, I prefer the DR much more because there are a thousand more breaks and beaches. I love being able to surf solo and develop new spots. DR is the 'new' Hawaii!

Cave Mountain
The "advanced team" has pushed through to Cave Mountain. "...we found a beautiful pool, a natural spring. We were amazed at how clear, big and deep it is. We found old steps, probably 200 or more. We hiked up them to the 'temple top' for some amazing views. After some searching, we found the Caves that we were looking for. They are big and beautiful." If all goes well, we should have the new Paddle Boarding path cut in a few weeks.

SUP Paddle Boarding Dominican Republic

Interview with National Champion John Holzhall.
Q. What do you think of Stand Up Paddle Boarding
A. I like everything except the name.
Q. What would you change it to?
A. Remo con Mesa...this means Paddle Board in Spanish.
Q. Tell us about your Paddle Board center in the DR.
A. It is freaking awesome!!! The Kite Beach Lagoon is only 100 meters from the Kite Beach, we have flat water jungle tours on one side and an incredible uncrowded Paddle Boarding Beach on the other side.
Q. Do you teach on both sides?
A. No, the lagoon side is safe enough to go unattended...the only thing that can happen back there is a person can get lost if they don't pay attention. The Kite Beach Lagoon is massive.
We teach SUP wave riding on the Ocean Side. We have a great spot but it requires, Technique, Strategy and Local Knowledge.
Q. They say this sport doesn't need any lessons.
A. Those guys who say that don't paddle in surf. Sure in the flats anyone can do it, but in waves there are things you really want to know and practice.
Q. Like what?
A. First thing is to learn how to turn a board with body weight, then how to surf the board with the paddle. A lot happens in the surf! We have an outer reef which is alive also.
Q. How much are lessons?
A. About $70usd.
Q. When do you go?
A. 7am daily.
Q. Which is more popular, SUP on the Lagoon or SUP in the Waves?
A. The Lagoon for sure...SUP fits perfect in the Lagoon and there is a lot that remains to be discovered. Plus anyone can do it. Wave riding is a skill which is acquired. Wave riding is great for the athlete.
Q. How do people book?
a. Stop by, email us or call 809-849-2147
